SDL Atlas beginning goes back to the 50s of the twentieth century in the UK. At that time Shirley Institute was founded where raw materials for the textile and apparel products were tested. Shirley Institute actively participated in construction of an equipment used in those studies and development of standards in textile tests.

As a result of restructure, in respond to market demand, Shirley Development firm had emerged and subsequently SDL International was created. At the turn of the century it merged with Atlas Company and had grown up to be known as SDL ATLAS.
